First post... urban farming is another name for growing your food in your yard... or, gardening. And that's what this blog will be all about... farming in your backyard. How to do it... who is doing it... and anything else that comes across my radar.
Some background on me... I grew up on a family farm in central Kansas, then moved to the city after college. After a number of years of suburban living, my wife and I built a house on a couple of acres west of Kansas City and grew extensive gardens. While we had gardens of many types (from Japanese style gardens to native herb and flower gardens to vegetable gardens, it was growing vegetables that I grew to love the most (it reminded me of my childhood interest in growing food). I loved experimenting with different open pollinated varieties, collecting seeds (and seed catalogs!), harvesting food, and getting to know the many insects and other animals that I shared my plants with. Another part of this experience was preserving the food we grew.
After a few years on this acreage, we moved to our current location in Portland, Oregon. Our current yard is not conducive to creating a backyard farm, so we're in the process of looking for a better location. Until that time arrives, I will focus on accumulating information on creating, developing and managing backyard farms, and sharing the information I discover.
Happy farming to you.
